LSI presents a wide-variety of Public Courses.  Our One-Day Lab Safety course features the fundamentals of lab safety and how to create a more effective lab safety program.  Our other one-day courses concentrate on specific lab safety topics.  Our Two-day Lab Safety Short Course adds additional topics and allows more time for discussion.  The Lab Safety Boot Camp (24-hours) is our most comprehensive regularly scheduled Lab Safety Short Course.  It covers an even greater variety of lab safety topics and includes inspection of lab facilities.  LSI also provides four and five day programs on request.

Two-Day Lab Safety Short Course

Two-Day Lab Safety Short Course (2DSC) provides an in-depth look at the fundamentals of lab safety and effective lab safety programs.  You will learn to identify and manage common laboratory hazards, many of which you may never have considered.  Topics include: chemical and biological hazards, electrical, emergency preparedness, fire control, handling glassware, hazardous material storage, hazardous waste management, legal aspects, OSHA Lab Standard, safety program planning, personal protective equipment, and ventilation. Safety In the Laboratory

One-Day Lab Safety Seminar (1DLS) is a condensed version of the two-day course, intended to provide participants with an overview of laboratory hazards, regulatory requirements and preventive measures.

Biosafety in the Laboratory

Biosafety in the Laboratory (BITL) This an introduction to the principles of biosafety, guidelines and regulations, decontamination and disinfection, disposal and shipment of biological materials/wastes, facility and equipment design, medical surveillance, practices and risk assessments. Participants will be introduced to key Biosafety reference materials and learn how to use them to perform basic biological risk assessments and establish appropriate levels of containment. We will review best practices to minimize the risk of laboratory acquired infections and standard precautions for proper handling of microorganisms. Discussions will be limited to Guidelines for safely handling microorganisms at both biosafety level 1 (BSL1) and  biosafety level 2 (BSL2) with minimal introduction to biosafety level 3 (BSL3).

How to Be a More Effective Chemical Hygiene Officer

How to Be a More Effective Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO) A new CHO, or an "old" one, will find something to put to real use in this fast-paced presentation. This seminar was developed by Russ Phifer, George Wahl, and Jim Kaufman (RJG Associates) for the American Chemical Society Division of Chemical Health and Safety as the prep course for the NRCC CHO Certification Exam. Topics include: OSHA Lab Std., other lab regulations, role of the CHO, getting others involved, developing and implementing your CHP, lab hazards and resources. Bring your CHP so it can be reviewed. Lab Waste Management

Lab Waste Management (LWM) identifies the various regulatory requirements that apply to laboratories that generate hazardous waste and provides insight into the options for on-site waste management and off-site disposal.  Topics include: environmental controls, regulatory requirements, liability, waste storage, working with vendors, manifests and required employee training. This course is based in part on a waste management course developed by Russ Phifer, W. C. Environmental.


Safety in Secondary School Science Labs

Safety in Secondary School Science Labs (SSSSL) is an intensive one-day seminar covering the fundamentals of lab safety and effective lab safety programs.  Topics include: scope of the problem, accidents, legal aspects, emergency planning, chemical handling, chemical storage, biological and animal hazards, eye and face protection, hazardous waste management, electrical safety and safety program planning.


Science Safety in the Elementary Classroom

Science Safety in the Elementary Classroom (SIE) is a one-day seminar on the principles and concepts of science safety for elementary (K-6) science teachers. Presents the New Standard for Safety in the Elementary Science Classroom. Provides a practical approach to including health and safety in the elementary science curriculum.

24-Hour Lab Safety Short Course (24HSC) is presented over three or four days and provides comprehensive coverage of the fundamentals of lab safety and effective safety programs.  In addition to a much more thorough discussion of the topics from the two-day short course, there are more activities, a lab tour and additional topics:  compressed gases, inspection of laboratories, OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Std., and radiation.
